Takato Yamamoto

Born in Akita, Japan in 1960. Painter and illustrator. Graduated from the Department of Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1983. Member of the International Ukiyo-e Society.

Since the early 1990s, he has pursued a style he calls “Ukiyo-e Pop,” merging the decorative qualities and compositions of ukiyo-e with contemporary sensibilities. Later, he developed his own concept of “Heisei Aestheticism (Heisei Estheticism),” establishing a unique artistic world where fantasy, illusion, and narrative coexist while inheriting the decorative spirit of the Rimpa school and the aesthetics of the Edo period. Through sophisticated line work, meticulous depictions, and richly symbolic visual language, he has earned high recognition both in Japan and abroad as one of the leading figures of contemporary Japanese fantasy painting.

In addition to producing illustrations and cover art for mystery, fantasy, and historical novels, he has participated in numerous solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and art fairs in Japan and internationally. His works have been presented in cities including Tokyo and Rome, and he continues to participate in major international art fairs such as ART FAIR TOKYO, ART TAIPEI, ART HK, ART STAGE SINGAPORE, and VOLTA NY.

Through a singular aesthetic that crosses Japanese tradition with contemporary fantasy expression, he has become widely recognized on the international art scene across Europe and Asia.
