Yuanyuan ZHANG
蜜蝋をメディウムとして顔料を混ぜて描く技法の起源は古く、二千年前の古代エジプトでは、ミイラの生前の肖像画が描かれ、それがミイラに貼り付けられていました。これは「エンカウスティーク」※と呼ばれる、熱によって蝋を溶かし定着させる古代の絵画技法です。
私は赤木範陸からこの技法を受け継ぎました。しかしその方法は、色を用いず、亜麻布に蝋を染み込ませることで濡れたような色調を生み出し、陰影を描き出すものであり、古代の技法とは異な るものでした。
私はその濡れた色調の中に、宋代山水画における「大気と水」を感じました。二千年前の異国の技法を通して、千年前に自国の先人たちが見出した「大気と水」を描きたいと思ったのです。
現在は、ささやかで身近な水を描くことに専念しています。しかしいつの日か、千年後にも、私が生きた時代の「大気と水」の残像を伝えることができればと願っています。

Concept
The technique of painting with beeswax as a medium mixed with pigments has ancient origins. In ancient Egypt two thousand years ago, portraits of the deceased were painted during their lifetimes and attached to their mummies. This ancient painting technique is called encaustic (German: Enkaustik), in which wax is melted by heat and fixed onto the surface.
I inherited this technique from Norimichi Akagi. However, his method differs from the ancient practice: it does not use color, but instead creates wet-toned hues by impregnating linen with wax, rendering light and shadow through subtle gradations.
Within these moist tonalities, I sensed the “atmosphere and water” found in Song dynasty landscape painting. Through a technique that originated in a foreign land two thousand years ago, I came to desire to depict the “atmosphere and water” that artists of my own country perceived a thousand years ago.
At present, I devote myself to depicting modest and familiar bodies of water. Yet I hope that one day, even a thousand years from now, the afterimage of the “atmosphere and water” of the era in which I lived may still be conveyed.
